Partners + Napier: An Introduction

So, where exactly is Rochester?

Admittedly , this was my first thought when seeing that I was placed at Partners + Napier. But, always up for an adventure, the location of my summer journey was solely a source of interest and excitement (perhaps with a small dash of jealousy for the big city MAIPers). Never did I resent this opportunity to escape the Florida summer heat.

I had no idea what to expect from Upstate NY, from MAIP or from my host agency, and details were a slow dripping faucet. But, now a Rochestarian for 3 weeks, I am grateful for those who have helped me along in my journey.

The biggest source of assistance and reassurance was my host agency Partners + Napier. I come from the hotbed of Southern Hospitality, but the care I received from the onboarding and HR team at Partners blew me out of the water. Always advocates, Partners has ensured that both myself and my fellow MAIPer Mariah have been comfortable and ready to learn.

Housing. The bane of this experience. Us Rochester MAIPers were placed at RIT (as opposed to the luxury high rise previous MAIPers had been placed at in previous years). Okay - deep breath... because that's life, right? Well, not only did Partners scope out our new accommodations, but they also set us up with some items, including snacks and cleaning supplies.

My arrival in this small, brick-adorned town reassured me that I was in good hands. I was met at the airport by one of Partner's onboarding specialists. Having a friendly face greeting me conveyed the agency's team mentality, a team I instantly felt a part of.

The next week was full of efforts to integrate Partner's interns into their team. We learned about each department in detail and what they do and got to see some of their past work. From admin to creative to accounts, directors from every department carved out time to teach us.

At Partners + Napier, interns also attend workshops including meeting etiquette, dress for success and ethics training (the latter being universally dry).

A office happy hour rounded off my first week at Partners. Everyone came together to celebrate the arrival of the newest class of talent, dubbed as the "Kiln Intern Class of 2019".

I am excited for my time at Partners + Napier, and am eager to take advantage of every opportunity!

Professional Accomplishments

There have both triumphs and setbacks in my role as an Account Leadership Intern.

Okay, so the main setbacks haven't entirely been negatives. I've mainly been limited by lack of background information and out of office messages. It is difficult to be looped into meetings when you don't know what the interests and progress of clients are. Its even more difficult to be looped into meetings when your supervisor(s) aren't in the office.

With this in mind, the meetings that I have attended thus far, and the tasks that I've been given to prepare for educated discussions have been largely successful.

So far my two main "projects" have been reports: one for Friendship Dairies and one for Delta Vacations. Working with these two very different clients has been an interesting exercise in changing hats and balancing different goals and needs.

Looking forward, I hope to continue to have a role in competitive and trend reports. Although I am not a full fledged strategist, I enjoy doing research. I am open to any and all tasks that I am given, and I aim to earn the trust of those I work with so I am given even more opportunities.

I am grateful for the feedback and encouragement that I've received from my peers and superiors thus far, and I hope that they continue to mold me into a more effective professional. I am starting to see that it is not the tasks you do that gives you valuable experience; it is the people who take the time to lead and teach you.
